Misconceptions About Dental Crowns

PetersenFamilyDentistry • May 17, 2017

Were you told you need a crown? Are you concerned about your upcoming appointment? Rest easy knowing that placing a crown is a simple procedure and should not be feared or avoided. Below, we have debunked four misconceptions about dental crowns.

Myth #1: Having a crown placed is an extensive, painful procedure.
As a patient, you can associate a crown procedure to having a cavity filled. Both require numbing injections and some minor drilling. Our patients feel very little discomfort during a crown placement, and the initial appointment takes no longer than 90 minutes.

Myth #2: Crowns don’t look like real teeth.
Crowns are made out of porcelain, so they are pearly white and similar in texture to natural teeth. When a crown is placed, we will make sure that your bite is aligned and that the surface of the tooth is properly shaped. Your crown will look and feel just like your other natural teeth.

Myth #3: Crowns can break or crack easily.
While crown breakage is possible, it is rare. A crown looks and feels just like a natural tooth, and similarly, it functions like one as well. Anything that can break a regular tooth can likely break a crown. Keep in mind that crowns are made out of porcelain, which is very hard and durable.

Myth #4: Crowns are just cosmetic.
This is not always the case. Many times after a root canal or particularly nasty cavity, a crown is necessary.

A crown procedure is often easy and painless, and the results are long-lasting.
