The Dental Implant Procedure De-Mystified

PetersenFamilyDentistry • December 6, 2017

Missing teeth can affect more than just your smile and self-confidence; it can lead to a number of different health problems. When you have missing teeth, your jaw and cheekbones can begin to hollow, changing the shape of your face. Your teeth may shift from their natural alignment, making brushing and flossing more difficult. You may also experience problems chewing, leading to poor digestion. Dental implants can help to alleviate these issues and restore your smile to its natural beauty.

What is the procedure like?
The first step in the dental implant process is to have a consultation with Dr. Petersen to develop a treatment plan unique to you. During this time, Dr. Petersen will assess whether or not you are a good candidate for an implant. Good candidates have healthy gums, good overall oral health, and good bone density to support the implant.

From there, an appointment will be scheduled to have the implant placed. Dr. Petersen works with exceptional surgical specialists for this step in the procedure. The surgeon will place the implant (which looks like a titanium screw) into the socket of the missing tooth. You may experience swelling and discomfort after the procedure, which can be alleviated with a prescribed pain medicine. There will then be a healing period of six to twelve weeks while the bone fuses to the metal. During this time, a diet of soft, cold foods and lukewarm soups is recommended.

After the implant has fused to the jawbone, a connector piece, also known as an abutment, is attached to the implant to hold your replacement tooth in place. To make the replacement tooth, an impression of your mouth will be taken to create a mold of your bite. Your new replacement tooth will be created from the mold. Once this is complete, the replacement tooth (the crown), will be attached to the abutment. The replacement tooth will match the color of your natural teeth and will be made to look, feel, and function just like your other teeth.

What are the benefits?

  • Enhanced appearance – Implants can help keep your teeth from shifting, and stop your cheek and jawbones from hollowing.
  • Improved speech – Unlike dentures, which can slip when speaking, dental implants allow you talk without worrying about your teeth moving.
  • Easier eating – Since implants function just like your normal teeth, there are no worries about not being able to eat all of your favorite foods.
  • More self-confidence – With dental implants, your smile can be restored to its natural beauty.
  • Improved oral health – Unlike tooth-supported bridges, implants don’t require the altering of supporting teeth, leaving more of your teeth intact, improving long-term oral health. Cleaning between teeth is easier since individual implants allow easier access between teeth.

When well cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime. Regular brushing, flossing, and trips to Petersen Family Dentistry can help in extending the life of your new implants.
